At this clinic, you will learn and practice the roll shot.
A pickleball roll shot is an offensive topspin shot where the paddle brushes up the back of the ball, creating forward spin that causes the ball to dip quickly after crossing the net and then “kick” forward after it bounces. The roll shot helps players keep the ball low, reduce pop-ups, and apply pressure to opponents during fast-paced exchanges.

The forehand roll shot is especially effective from the transition zone and at the kitchen line. Off a bounce, the player starts with the paddle in front and slightly below the ball, uses a compact low-to-high brushing motion, and finishes with the paddle up and forward toward the target. At the kitchen line, the forehand roll volley uses a similar topspin brushing action without a backswing, allowing players to attack higher balls while maintaining control and keeping the shot low over the net.

Key elements of an effective roll shot include:
•    Ready paddle position in front of the body
•    Compact stroke technique with an upward brushing motion
•    Contact slightly in front of the body
•    Relaxed grip for better feel and spin
•    Paddle finishing high and toward the target

Learning the roll shot is crucial for advancing your game because it helps stop pop-ups, improves consistency in transition play, and creates more aggressive yet controlled attacks that challenge opponents in competitive matches.
